DataExchange.log continually growing #6268
Hi Guys,

one of our customers is using the CardExchange with an MSSQL Server and the auto print functionality. While the automatic print is running the DataExchange.log is continually growing even if no badge is printed. It is already 4 GB big and doesn't stop. Do you have an idea why the file grows or is there an option to maximise the LOG size?

Hi Ingo,

The auto-print server is continuously polling the database to see if cards need to be printed. Each poll involves a query that is logged to the DataExchange.log file. So the file will continue growing, even if nothing is printed. When CardExchange is started, it discards the log from the previous session and starts a new one. If you never restart CardExchange, the log file can become very big.

The polling interval is by default every ten seconds. I understand that with your installation the auto-print server is also used for taking photos and where they use a very short interval. That means that the log file will grow a lot quicker.

Does CardExchange currently get restarted ata given interval ?
If not is it possible to schedule a restart of CardExchange on a daiy basis at a time when it is not being used to see if that resolves the issue ?

Craig

Hi Craig,

thanks for the info. At the moment they don't restart the software or server once the application is running nobody touches it. It would be nice to max the log size but if this is not possible we will try to delete it via batch job or to restart the application every 24h with the windows scheduler. The polling interval is quick but not unusual in my opinion.

Hi Ingo,

Like you say it would be good if we could check the file size or the date of the file perhaps and when it reaches a certain size or the date changes the file is deleted and recreated. I will add this as an option to be considered for a future release.

For now perhaps a small batch file executed each day to just delete the file would be enough as CardExchange should recreate the file when it tries to add log entries.

If you have issues let m eknow and I will check/test it here.

Regards,
Craig
